This wonderful and moving old hymn was written by Sarah Fuller Flower Adams. She was born at Harlow, Essex. Her longest work is Vivia Perpetua, A Dramatic Poem (1841), which is about the early Christians. Mrs. Adams was a Unitarian, and the author of several hymns.
She died from tubercolosis at the age of 43 and was buried at Harlow on August 21, 1848.

That's a classic! Thanks for sharing.

It is almost impossible for me to listen to or sing this song without crying. I have tears in my eyes right now. I guess it brings back so many memories. I was a Pastor for 47 years and I have lost count of the number of funeral services we sang this song at. I was interested to read about the author and surprised she was Unitarian. I may disagree with her on doctrine but not on this song. It moves me deeply. I also love the video and beautiful pictures. Thanks for posting.

I love old hymns sung in the old ways as much as I do the new ones.

I love listening to your beautiful hymns. They are such memories. I think we need to invite the new, but never let go of the old....

Beverly, I love this song. As I recall, the band on the Titanic played this as the ship went down. People in the rescue boats and the water could hear it. What a comfort in those awful hours.
XO,
Sheila :-)
