Today I am joining Susan at Between Naps On The Porch
for
Metamorphosis Monday.
Thank you, Susan.
When we moved into our home twenty-one years ago, I hung a gallery of family photos on a wall in our upstairs landing. While I loved the photos I had hanging, I didn't like the mish mash of frames. When I had the upstairs painted, I didn't rehang the photos because I planned to reframe them. The empty wall remained that way because I just couldn't get myself to the place of being ready to tackle such a big job.
Finally, last week we decided to go for it. My husband and I both had the week off of work, and we spent many hours working on this. Photos had to be scanned, edited to black and white and then printed. My husband had my office floor taped to the size of the wall, and we used that to come up with the layout. It was actually fun going through all of these old photos and looking at pictures we had not seen in many years. I am still working on photo identification labels to go on the back of each frame.
Here is the wall before we started. This is a difficult place to get photos, so please excuse the quality.
Here is our design layout on my office floor.
Here is the finished wall. As you can see, we had to alter the layout a bit because our layout plan was off by about three inches. Who would have guessed three inches could be such a huge issue, but we finally finished.
And, we are liking it.
I am also joining Marina on Tuesday at Only Cute Things for Step By Step.

Beverly, this is wonderful! I love a gallery wall and this one is stunning! The black frames add just the right amount of sophistication and elegance to those wonderful old photos. I know what an intimidating job it is to hang that many photos. Thinking back to my stairwell...yikes. You definitely deserve a huge pat on the back. I love it!

Good job on your family photo wall! It is very difficult to arrange that many photos. Have a great week! Linda

I would like to help with Charlie's cause, but not sure where I need to go to do a posting. I am an interior designer, but VERY new to blogging. Please email me and tell me how I can get involved.

Hi Beverly,
you did a good job placing all the pictures, almost like putting a puzzle together.
I like all the black and white, looks good with the wall color.
Have a nice day!

I had the same wall several houses ago. Grouping is the best way to disguise the switches. Don't you wonder what they were thinking...or not?

It turned out great Beverly! I love the old vintage frames surrounded by the black ones...perfect!
I want to do something similar on my stairway wall, only I plan on using different stlyed frames and mirrors as well as some corbels... It might be a winter project.
Hugs,
Penny

I LOVE your family gallery! I know it's a lot of work. I'm working on one right now. I'm still going through photos to select just the right ones. Shopping for frames will be next. I'll let you see it when it's finished. Mine won't be as big as yours - mine is just above the new big-screen TV in the living room. The wall needs some black and I will feature our grandchildren. You've inspired me, my friend!

That's so wonderful that you have so many awesome photos of your family. What a great job you guys did with those pictures...love it that you made them all into B/Ws and that you used the same frames...allowing the vintage frames/photos to really stand out!! What a great family tree via photos you have created. Oh, and I love that church pew, too!!!
