Pink Saturday - June 20, 2009

Happy Pink Saturday!

My pink contribution for this Pink Saturday is this pretty pink Limoges box.  It is very small; two inches wide.  I have had it about fifteen years, and it lives on a shelf in my home office.

 

This week we have one hundred fifty (150) participants in Pink Saturday.  There are fourteen new participants, and you will find them at the bottom of the list.  Let's all take time to welcome them to Pink Saturday

I've Got Friday On My Mind

An Update On My Mother

So many of you have been so wonderful to keep my mother in your prayers.  I appreciate your concern more than you can know.

I took my mother for a follow-up appointment last Friday.  Next week will be three months since she fell and broke her shoulder.  The doctors offered her the option of letting her shoulder heal or having a full shoulder replacement.  She and I decided that given the severity of the break, the difficulty of the surgery and the tough recuperation that she would opt to let the shoulder heal.

And, her shoulder is healing, but very slowly.  First they started her doing very limited exercises here at home, and she has since started with the physical therapist.  She is still doing very simple exercise, but it is extremely painful for her.

I feel really bad for my mother not only because of the pain and discomfort, but because there are so many things she wants to do that she can't.  She can't drive now, and I know that really bothers her.  I empathize how difficult this must be for her emotionally.

I hope she knows how much I hate this for her.  And, I want her to keep trying to be happy.  Getting older certainly can be tough.  Sometimes I think she wants me to be more sympathetic, but I feel like I need to stay upbeat and strong.  I just feel like we all need a little push sometimes.  I want to make everything good for her, and I want to make her happy.  But, someone else can't do that for you.

This is my mother's favorite verse, and it is a good one to help me keep my focus.

My answer to the question yesterday is that we don't normally take a vacation in the summer.  We usually try to get away for a while in the spring and again in autumn.

We weren't able to get away last year, and it doesn't seem to be looking too good for this year.  I really could use a vacation, but I know it will happen one of these days.

It was another challenging day at work yesterday, and I told someone to "Hang On".  The next thing I know I am singing this song to myself.  I certainly brings back memories.

A Blue and Mosaic Monday

Today I am sharing a mosaic of blue around our home.  Thank you to Mary's Mosaic Monday at Little Red House and Sally's Blue Monday at Smiling Sally.

Jesus Loves Me

Please visit Spiritual Sunday to fill your heart with joy.

Anna and Susan Warner lived in New York City with their father, a successful lawyer.  When the Panic of 1837 came, the family finances were wrecked.   They began writing poems and stories for publication in order to contribute to the family income.

One of their most successful projects was a novel titled Say and Seal in which a little boy is dying.  His Sunday school teacher comforts him by rocking him, and making up a little song: "Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so ...".

The novel became a bestseller, and hymnwriter William Bradbury composed a childlike score to go along with the song.  "Jesus Loves Me" soon became the best-known children's hymn on earth.

Susan and Anna conducted Bible classes for cadets at West Point for forty years.  They are the only civilians buried in the military cemetary at West Point.

We're flying our grand flag.

My pink contribution for this Pink Saturday is this gorgeous pink rose bloom, First Prize.  It consists of deep rose pink buds of amazing length and spiral grace which open to immense blooms.  The inside petals are a lighter shade giving the flower a glowing effect.  First Prize was the only AARS winner in 1970, and is one of the most highly rated of all roses.  And, not only is it beautiful, it has a wonderful fragrance.  I hope you aren't tired of seeing roses.

Did You Know ...

that on this day in 1942, Anne Frank received a diary for her thirteenth birthday?  There are so many that have read Anne's diary, and been moved to the point that we will remember it our entire lives.

Anne was born June 12, 1929 in Frankfurt.  She was a Jewish girl, and she lived most of her life in or near Amsterdam.  She gained international fame posthumously following the publication of her diary documenting her experiences hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II.

Anne and her family moved to Amsterdam in 1933 after the Nazis gained power in Germany.  They were trapped by the occupation of the Netherlands, and as persecutions against the Jews escalated, Anne and her family went into hiding in July 1942 in hidden rooms of her father's office building.  After two years, the group was betrayed and transported to concentration camps.  Seven months after her arrest, Anne Frank died of typhus at Bergen-Belsen.  Her father Otto, the only survivor of the group, returned to Amsterdam after the war to find that her diary had been saved, and his efforts led to its publication in 1947. It was translated from its original Dutch and first published in English in 1952 as The Diary of a Young Girl.

The diary, which was given to Anne on her 13th birthday, chronicles her life from June 12, June 1942 until August 1, 1944.  It has been translated into many languages, has become one of the world's most widely read books, and has been the basis for several plays and films.  Anne Frank has been acknowledged for the quality of her writing, and has become one of the most renowned and discussed victims of the Holocaust.

Just A Chat And An Answer

First of all, let me answer yesterday's question.  I generally don't snack after dinner.  In fact, I don't consistently eat dinner.  If my husband isn't working, we usually just eat two meals a day - breakfast and dinner.  And, we try to eat dinner no later than five.  When he is working, I don't usually eat when I get home from work.  If I do eat something in the evening, it is usually some type of berry.  I love blackberries, raspberries, blueberries and strawberries.  And, I like mine plain.  No sugar or whipped cream for me.

I have a funny story about dinner.  Years ago I invited my aunt and uncle for dinner.  I told them to come any time of the day they wanted so we could visit.  My aunt told me they would be here by one o'clock in the afternoon.  They actually came about noon.  I had made us a crab and pasta salad, and I offered them some, but they said they didn't want anything before dinner.

About three o'clock my aunt asked me when I was going to have dinner ready, and I told her that I planned on us eating about five.  She gave me the funniest look.  Well, it turned out that we call our three meals in a day breakfast, lunch and dinner.  They call the meals breakfast, dinner and supper.  No wonder they were surprised.  And, I definitely got busy preparing dinner because I knew they must be hungry.

That happened more than fifteen years ago, and we still laugh about it.
