"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" was first recorded was by the Fisk Jubilee Singers in 1909. In 2002, the the song was honored by the Library of Congress as one of 50 recordings chosen that year to be added to the National Recording Registry.
The words were written by Wallis Wills, a Choctaw freedman, sometime before 1862. He was inspired by the Red River which reminded him of the River Jordan, and of the Prophet Elijah being taken to heaven by a chariot.
Alexander Reid, a minister at a Choctaw boarding school, heard Willis singing these two songs and transcribed the words and melodies. He sent the music to the Jubilee Singers of Fish University in Nashville, Tennessee. The Jubilee Singers then popularized the songs during a tour of the United States and Europe.
Today is set aside as a day to honor all of the wonderful father's so many have blessing their lives.
I am blessed to have two wonderful men in my life that are awesome fathers - my husband and our son. They both live their lives for their families, and all of us are better people for having them in our lives. I wish them many more joyful Father's Day celebrations.
My own father died twenty-three years ago. I am always close to tears around Father's Day. I just can't help it, but the day makes my heart long even more for the sound of his voice and one of his hugs. I thank God for all that my dear father was to me, and I will always miss him sorely.
It takes someone special to deserve being called Daddy.
